Works completed under a JCT Intermediate Contract with Contractor Design.

The works included internal alterations to the layout, new glazed barriers and screens were installed to replace old safety barriers to improve visitor visibility of the mill workings.

Specialist joinery works, decoration and flooring completed.

Extensive repair works were undertaken to the under-croft masonry, metalworks and joinery.

Repairs also completed to external pointing and brickwork, roofing and windows.
- Associated mechanical & electrical installations & upgrades & works to improve fire safety systems.
Including installation of misting system were undertaken by specialist sub-contractors working closely with the Contract Manager & Project Officer to ensure fully integrated, effective yet unobtrusive systems were installed.

Essential to the development of the project was a collaborative approach. Although there was a scope of works much of the detailing was developed during the programme since it was not possible to design the whole refurbishment until areas were exposed and exact condition of masonry, brickwork and timbers known.

The works were done in close co-ordination with the Council Conservation Officer and the Project Officer.

Some of the elements required contractor design fabrication and installation & all had to be in compliance with the Listed Building Consent & conditions.

It was critical that all works were completed using sympathetic materials and traditional techniques.

HP Contracts engaged the use of specialist suppliers for example the Lime Centre to work with closely on the development of suitable mortar mixes to not only match the existing but suit the demanding environment to ensure long term durability.

Material samples were obtained for approval before installation for example bricks & mortars and sections of work produced for approval before whole areas completed.

Throughout the works some areas of the Mill remained open to the public consequently requiring close focus on health and safety, careful segregation, agreed scheduling of noisy works, constant good housekeeping & focus on minimising the visual impact of the restorations so that the visitor experience was not compromised.

The mill is located in a residential area adjacent to a bridge with toll booth, deliveries were therefore carefully.

Organised and programmed to avoid creating congestion & minimise disruption to neighbouring properties.

Completed project officially opened in April 2018 by HRH The Duke of Gloucester.
